Hans Wilsdor was born in Bavarian in 1881. In 1905, he together with an Englishman named Davis set up the company-W&D specializing in clocks and watches of all sorts. Wilsdor registered the trademark-Rolex in Swiss on July 2th, 1908 when the timepiece industry welcomed another legendary luxury brand as well as one landmark innovation after another.
In 1914, a small wristwatch of this brand obtained the class A certifucate issued by the Kew Observatory, UK. The certificate represents the authoritative observatory’s highest approval to watches and clocks, which made the Rolex watches value placed on the doubled. In the decades since then, they have become a synonym for precision.
At the close of World War One, in 1926, Rolex launched the world’s first water&dust-proof wristwatch, namely the OYSTER. In 1927, an Englishwoman resoundingly swam across the English Channel, wearing this kind of wristwatch which, shockingly, not only functioned well but also kept good time after enjoying a sightseeing tour in the seawater for 15 hours. Going by the name of “the greatest victory of the watch-making technology”, this event finally aided it to hold a leading position in the watch waterproofing technology. In 1931, it turned out the PERPETUAL Collection, revolutionizing the timepiece industry. Its strongest trait is that the wearer can wind it up with the wrist’s gentle motion dispensing with manual-winding labor, which was universally acknowledged to be the most accurate and dependable watch self-winding technology.
The Rolex watch has always won good reputation by right of professional functions. For example, watches for pilots invented in 1955 made it convenient for people to measure time in different time zones, accurately. The same year, the 100-meter waterproof table for the deep-sea diver appeared in the annals of history, creating a miracle in the timepiece industry.
The mark of Rolex was a palm-sized pattern originally meaning that its products are fully hand-made, which gradually represented the imperial crown known intimately by people today symbolizing its style of king. In the world market, the price of a common Rolex wristwatch varies from 1, 000 to 1, 500 US dollars, which may be somewhat high; however, people think it’s worth it not only for its good quality but also for its unique investment value. In 2002, its Gold Calendar produced in 1952 and once used by Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, sold for $235, 400 in an auction in Geneva.
During the last century-the mechanical watch age, Rolex has always been the bellwether in the global timepiece industry. Up to this day, outstanding crafts and technologies make it still keep a leading position which, undoubtedly, will remain for a long period of time.
